Edgartown Regatta and Race Weekend

July is a busy month at the Edgartown Yacht Club. First on the schedule is the EYC 90th annual Regatta for one-design classes, July 11 to 13. For more information, visit edgartownyc.org

Next is the Edgartown Race Weekend, scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, July 17 to 21. Hosting classes for IRC, PHRF, Double-Handed, Cruising, and Classic sailboats, the weekend’s centerpiece is the popular 54.7 nautical mile ‘Round the Island Race on July 20, originally inspired by the Race Around the Isle of Wight and attracting name sailors annually since 1938.

The Big Boat Buoy Races, July 18 to 19, added as a one-day event in 2012, have been expanded to two days for 2013, promising to similarly cultivate a devoted following of racing aficionados.

Edgartown Race Weekend’s social schedule includes a Welcome Reception on July 17, a Mount Gay sponsored “jump-up” July 19, and prize awards on July 19 and 20.

The entry deadline for the Big Boat Buoy Races is July 17. For the ‘Round the Island Race, the deadline is July 19. The events are scored separately and have their own Notices of Race and entry forms; however, there is no additional entry fee to compete in the buoy races.

Men’s softball

The game of the night in Monday night’s double-header of weather-postponed, make-up games at Veterans Park matched the unbeaten Blazers against the perennially strong Brewhas. The Blazers (6-0) have been the surprise of the Island Softball League this season, scoring impressive wins over the two-time defending champion Hurricanes and the Highlanders.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Blazers were well on their way to a seventh win, up 18-10. The Brewhas had other ideas and staged a dramatic comeback. Gary Kovack of the U.S. Coast Guard capped off the rally by launching a towering three-run homer 10 yards over the left field fence to give the Brewhas a 20-18 win.

The second game of the night was none too shabby either as the Hurricanes (6-1) topped the Highlanders (4-2) in a 13-11 slugfest. Bobby Sprague hit three homers and James Holenko one for the ‘Canes. The duo hit back to back dingers in the fourth inning. Jeremy Scheffer had two round-trippers for the Highlanders, while Ryan Kurth and Joe Merry each homered once.
