I was entertained to read the responses on the MV Times website to the recent invasion of Portuguese man-o-war just in time for our lovely 4th of July heatwave. Rather than the cranky back and forth I’m used to coming across in the comments section, readers launched right into quotes from Jaws, and that movie’s anticipation of the impending holiday amid reports of one particular large and blood thirsty uninvited visitor. Sometimes life imitates art. Priceless.

I finally made it in the ocean myself on Sunday, but I must admit I chose the North Shore for fear of those violently tentacled creatures, and after seeing pictures of the aftermath of Kurstin Meehan’s brawl with the beast, I’d say I chose well. Hope you are healing well, friend. That will be a story to tell your grandkids.

I’ve had news that big girl, Cloe Boccia (4.5 years), just completed her first parentless trip to MV, spending the whole weekend with her granny and Paw Paw, John and Kathy Benoit. Cloe spent time at the Bend in the Road and the Game Room, and basically ran the roost all weekend. Mother, Kelly, and Dad, Jay, say she was quite reluctant to come home and is begging to go back. I’m sure Granny and Paw Paw will happily oblige.

St. Andrew’s Church will hold their Second Annual Craft Fair on Saturday, July 20th, from 10 am to 3 pm. If you have a craft and would like to be included, please call Bonnie Deitz at 508-627-4669 or email her at bonnie_deitz@comcast.net for an application before July 18. Space is available for 5X8 tables ($30) and 8X10 tables ($50). Funds from table space benefit The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts in its endeavors to address all kinds of needs and to fund the work of their many wonderful ministries.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is excited to welcome Vineyard summer resident and long time author and investment banker Amor Towles to speak about his novel, Rules of Civility. Amor Towles will speak on Thursday, July 11, at the Federated Church, beginning at 5:30 pm. The best-selling book was published in the summer of 2011. Rules of Civility tells the story of 25-year old Katey Kontent. On the last night of 1937 in a second-rate Greenwich Village bar, Katey meets Tinker Grey, a handsome banker. This chance encounter propels Katey on a year-long journey in the upper echelons of New York society. (Incidentally, it was one of my favorite reads last summer.) Towles has been summering in West Chop for a number of years.

And now for birthdays! Here is this week’s list of recipients of our hugs, honks, Wharf paddles (ahem, Amanda), and otherwise best wishes: Amanda Hollyfield and Kathy Benoit celebrate July 11; followed by Annie Sylvia, July 12; Jaime Gaspar, July 13; Jay Swartz and Kalle Connelly, July 14; Joanne Cassidy DeRoche, July 16; and Hannah Guerin, July 17. Hope you have a great one! And Amanda, when they’re winding up the paddle at the Pub, just think — at least it’s not a man-of-war.
