Poets Corner: A Higher Order of Thinking

Roundabout

Who thought a roundabout would be,

when passing through it, poetry?

Counter clockwise, like the stars,

it moves us forward in our cars.

It exits, north, south, east and west,

reminding one of nature’s best.

It has horizons and it mocks

those who fought its equinox,

for it has made our traffic ease.

Instead of slowing, we get speed.

Once one decides which road to choose,

our minds can rest, enjoy the views.

It gets us where we want to go;

we can just follow in the flow.

It saves our tempers that were lost

when we were forced to make those stops.

So, why not bury all your doubts

about its coming? We were louts.

Admit it gives us much less stress,

and makes some order from our mess.

We don’t miss those old stop signs,

or flashing reds with their designs.

Just like the intersecting roads

this smooth “donut” has its codes.

You may choose the road you like;

it’s not a Martha’s Vineyard pike.

It takes you where you want to go,

all the while, maintaining flow.
