You don’t have to be a foodie to appreciate Vineyard food blogs

The number of blogs to be found on the internet can be dizzying — more than 181 million by one estimate. As a result, it can be difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. So we thought we would help by highlighting three blogs produced by Martha’s Vineyard foodies Jan Buhrman, Sarah Waldman, and husband and wife team Kelley DeBettencourt and Ezra Agnew. Each blog brings a different perspective to the subjects of food, local produce and cooking, and all are entertaining and informative.

Living Local on Martha’s Vineyard

Jan Buhrman of Chilmark, a well known Island caterer and cooking instructor, has created a rich and varied website, kitchenporch.com, that includes a blog, under the heading “Living Local,” that brims with recipes, instructional videos, and instructions on harvesting and using local ingredients.

Every post is intended to educate readers with socially conscious thoughts on eating and living sustainably. The result is not just a recipe blog, but a collection of food experiences. Among other ingredients, she says her philosophy is built on a bottle of sparkling prosecco, two cups slow food, two cups Wendell Berry, and a handful of Julia Child.

Ms. Buhrman is the owner and operator of Kitchen Porch, a catering company, and Culinary Experiences, which offers cooking courses, workshops, cooking experiences, and Vineyard food tours.

Two Blue Lemons

Sarah Waldman of West Tisbury, a self-described “wellness warrior,” writes about cooking healthy food for families in her blog “Two Blue Lemons.”

She says it is devoted to “helping you live a simple, healthy life” in a world that is not always so simple. Ms. Waldman should know – she’s the mother of a toddler, with another little boy on the way.

“Two Blue Lemons is a diary of my family’s Island life and the food from our kitchen,” Ms. Waldman wrote in an email to The Times. “I try to show that cooking nutritious simple food is easy and approachable especially for families with small children at home. I can’t help but be inspired by the farms and sea around us. Our daily rhythm takes us to exciting food destinations.”

Ms. Waldman trained at New York’s Institute for Integrative Nutrition. What is a wellness warrior, besides someone who posts delicious recipes for healthy treats like frozen yogurt covered berries? Ms. Waldman said, “It means caring about yourself and those around you, it means trying to stop the cycle of fake food being fed to our kids, and it means seeking out and enjoying the beautiful whole foods next door.”

Hungry Native

You don’t have to be native to the Island to appreciate the delectable blog posts from Hungry Native.

Husband and wife team Kelley DeBettencourt and Ezra Agnew of Vineyard Haven seek out the best native fare from Martha’s Vineyard and beyond. Ms. DeBettencourt’s mouth-watering photos (she doubles as a professional photographer), paired with Mr. Agnew’s recipes and cooking tips, are ideal for those who want to eat locally while still satisfying their hunger.

“Our focus is on local ingredients, and the chefs and cooks who are using them in new and interesting ways,” Mr. Agnew said in an email. “Our blog’s goal is to showcase the variety of food available to Islanders and visitors alike.”

Because no one has ever filled up on kale chips, Ms. Debettencourt and Mr. Agnew have collected a variety of recipes for heartier appetites, that include striped bass with a buttery lobster sauce, and chocolate cherry stout skull cake. And if you’re going off the rock, the folks at Hungry Native have got you covered too. They collect inspiration from all their travels, whether its iguana meat from a market in Cambridge or “mayoketchup” slathered street food in San Juan.
