Then and now in swordfish

To the Editor:

Ever wonder what happened to the swordfish fishery south of the Vineyard?

Thirty years ago this coming Saturday, August 3, Whit Manter and I, with guests Paul Moyer and Vern Laux, aboard the 26-foot Super Sea Saw, landed one thousand five hundred and seventy-six pounds of harpooned swordfish at Menemsha. Today, longlined swordfish have to dress 33 pounds to be legal. At that rate, how many longlined swordfish does it take to weigh what we brought in? For our harpooned fish, it was six.
