Windy City runner wins Scoops 5K

Under bright blue skies on a picture-perfect Sunday morning at Katama Farm, Ed McCarter from the Chicago suburb of La Grange, Illinois, was the first of 487 runners Sunday morning to reach the finish line in the 21st annual Vineyard Scoops 5K Tour of Edgartown.

The Windy City runner completed the Katama course that began and ended at the Farm Institute in a time of 18:09.

Christopher Vigeant of Fairhaven (18:35) was second. Rene Da Silva of Vineyard Haven (18:45) was the first Vineyarder and placed third, followed by Benjamin Gersch (19:18) of Bethesda, Maryland, in fourth and Steven Eick (19:38) of New York City in fifth.

Sarah Oliver of Marblehead led the women, finishing in 20:25, good for 13th overall. Kristina Conroy of Easthampton (20:40) was the women’s runner-up. Grace Vogalzang of Lexington was next in 20:48, followed by Brooklynites Megan Baldwin and Carey Baldwin, who finished tied at 21:43. Jane Walshe of Edgartown (22:49) was the first local woman to cross the line. She finished eighth.
