Author, humorist, and NPR commentator Marion Winik will read from her newest book, “Highs in the Low Fifties,” at a benefit appearance August 8 at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs. The event will raise money for Martha’s Vineyard Family Planning.

Ms. Winik’s book, a hilarious account of her stumbles through middle aged singlehood, has received great reviews from critics for its achingly honest portrayal of her experiences.

Ms. Winik holds back little in her stories. She interviewed her 12-year old daughter, who is accompanying her mom on the current book tour. Her daughter put it this way:

“She doesn’t care what people think and she is fearless. She doesn’t always make the greatest choices, but she always makes jokes out of the outcomes, which is really good. Her attitude about life is crazy and awesome and she is very generous and stuff. She has a postcard over her desk that says, ‘If you can’t be a good example, you’ll just have to serve as a horrible warning,’ which I think explains it perfectly.”

The event begins at 4:30 pm under the tent at Featherstone. $50; $45 in advance (ticketsmv.com), admission price includes a copy of the book. For more information, call 508-693-1850 or visit featherstoneart.org.
