Did everyone see that amazing rainbow Sunday night? That was some crazy weather. First we heard the thunder inexplicably crashing through blue sunny skies, then as we set off toward the ferry dock in Oak Bluffs, there was that perfect stripe of color emerging from the clouds. We emerged from Harthaven to streets slick from a recent deluge. Bone dry in one town and drenched in the next. It’s going to be an interesting storm season this year, methinks.

Bob Avakian had a full weekend of artist showings at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House last week, as well as a feature in the Boston Globe for his participation in a juried photography show at the Griffin Museum in Winchester. If you haven’t checked out Bob’s photos yet, you really must. He manages to capture those glimpses of the Vineyard and beyond that most of us catch from time to time with a gasp and a comment on if only we had the ability to get that on film. Bob manages to grab these twilight moments like fireflies in a bottle and distill them in a frame. Visit bobavakianphotography.com for a taste, and don’t miss the next show.

Proud Mama Susie Murray happily albeit mistily reported that son Zach was named Edgartown Yacht Club Sailor of the Week. Zach has taken to his new passion for sailing like, well, a fish to water. Sister Hannah has been keeping busy as well, playing tennis and catching horseshoe crabs. AND Hannah now jumps off the high dock at the Chappy Beach Club. All growed up, these kids.

I’ve had word from the Friends of the Edgartown Library that they have recently helped librarian Jill Hughes and her staff host the Authors’ Breakfast for the MV Book Festival last weekend. Great food, flowers, and writers. Now the Friends have finalized plans for their Pennywise Path USATF Certified Fun Run/Walk for ALL ages on Monday, September 2. The event will support the new library. Posters around town have information, and registration forms are available at the library. Sign up early because the first 100 participants will be guaranteed a tee-shirt.

Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary has a bunch of fun ongoing events to break up the monotony of those arduous days on the beach, including guided kayak tours, day or night; marine discovery boat rides on the Skipper; walks on the beach; birding on Sengekontacket; and insect observation. So many great opportunities to get out there and delight in the Island’s other, oft-overlooked residents, from shore birds to shellfish to dragon flies. Visit massaudubon.org/felixneck or call 508-627-4850 for a full schedule.

The Federated Church Annual House Tour will be held in Edgartown on Tuesday, Aug. 13, beginning at 1 pm at St. Andrews parish house with a talk by historian Mary Jane Carpenter about the five houses, followed by the tour, from 2 to 4:30 pm. Tea, lemonade, and cookies will be available under the tent at 60 Fuller St. Tickets will be available the day of the tour, in front of the parish house, or at each of the houses: 35 and 71 Planting Field Way, 108 Pease’s Point Way, and 7 and 60 Fuller St. Look for the balloons.

Hey folks, it’s pancake time! The 9th Annual Pancake Breakfast to benefit the Cancer Support Group will take place August 11, from 8:30 to 10:30 am at the Federated Church on South Summer St. In addition to the sweet round syrup-drenched delights, bacon, sausage, and beverage will be served. So bring a friend and break your fast for this worthy cause.

A big bunch of balloons go out to Amelia Ball, whose birthday is August 10. I’ll meet you down in the shire for some celebratory grog, buddy.
