Is it fall already? It seems so as the temperature dipped into the low 50s this week. It didn’t stop visitors or traffic from crowding into the towns, sightseeing and shopping. Even though the cooler weather was a nice break from hot and humid, we know that summer weather will return many times more before the true autumn.

There will be an evening of Gospel and Jazz with Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Dana Hicks on Saturday, August 17, at the First Baptist Church on the corner of Spring and William Streets in Vineyard Haven. Dr. Hicks’s repertoire includes a range of music from classical to gospel and jazz to Broadway musicals and pop. Reservations are required for the reception, with appetizers, and concert which starts at 6 pm in the parish hall; tickets are $30. Concert only tickets are $20 in advance or at the door in the sanctuary as seating allows. Doors open at 7 pm. The Federated Church Annual House Tour will be held in Edgartown on Tuesday, August 13, beginning at 1 pm at St. Andrews parish house with a talk by historian Mary Jane Carpenter about the five houses, followed by the tour, from 2 to 4:30 pm. Tea, lemonade, and cookies will be available under the tent at 60 Fuller St. Tickets will be available the day of the tour, in front of St. Andrews parish house, or at each of the houses, so look for the balloons! Cost is $35 per person.

During the performance of HMS Pinafore by Children’s Group at the Tabernacle on Saturday, August 10, from 6 to 7:30 pm you will be able to partake of delicious meat loaf, mac ‘n’ cheese, vegetable, drink, and dessert — for $10.

Vineyard Sound will be singing as part of the United Methodist Church Services in the Campground on August 4 and August 11. Service starts at 11 am. After the service all are welcome to the Fellowship Time in the air-conditioned parish house where coffee, iced tea, lemonade, and cookies will be served.

On Sunday, August 11, there will be an 8 pm concert at the Tabernacle presented by the Vineyard Haven Band in tribute to Dr.Gary Zwicky. No admission charge, and there will be a free will offering. And be sure to attend the Grand Illumination night on Wednesday, August 14, at 7:30 pm, free-will offering

Two programs will proceed a summer Soul Brunch on August 12. There will be beach yoga from 7 to 8 am at Inkwell Beach, followed by beachercise — cardio and strength training — from 8 to 9 am. The Soul Brunch will follow from 10 am to 1 pm at Dreamland, featuring engaging, thought-provoking speakers, entertainment and food! Anne Sharon Young has made her presence known once again this year by her Scrabble on the Beach prowess. Last year she used all seven letters or “dropped all her letters” five times. This year the previous record was smashed when she was able to drop all her letters an unbelievable eight times. Congratulations Annie!

Spend an hour and learn how to save a life, by taking the Citizen CPR class at the Mansion House Health Club to learn Hands-Only CPR this summer. CPR Certified Instructor Jennifer Fragosa leads the hour-long class on August 13 and 20 and September 10 and 17 at 6:45 pm. Free for health club members and included with $18 visit passes. “The Graduate” is undoubtedly one of Island resident Mike Nichols’s best films, and it comes to the Film Center at 10 pm on both Friday, August 9, and Saturday, August 10. Pricing is $12 for general admission and $7 for Martha’s Vineyard Film Society members. Having been to the Film Center for a concert a few weeks ago, I can testify to the comfortable seating and wonderful acoustics there.
