Dubliner Conor Dooney wins 35th Chilmark Road Race

Irish eyes were smiling Saturday morning as Dubliner Conor Dooney won the 35th Chilmark Road Race, best among 1,500 runners who enjoyed beautiful sun-splashed conditions along Middle Road in Chilmark.

The Irishman, who attended Yale University, clocked in at 16:05.31.

“It was good, a tough course, not fast, but very pleasant,” said Mr. Dooney, who won the race in his first attempt.

The race runner-up was another Ivy Leaguer, Brown University graduate Corey Kunz of Hoboken, New Jersey, who came to the line in 16:30.66.

Third place belonged to Hugh Parker of New York City (16:39.76), followed by 4. Keegan Skidmore, Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, 17:01.66; 5. Ben Bosworth, Dorchester, 17:03.90; 6. Jake McCauley, Darien, Connecticut, 17:09.83; 7. Peter Metz, Washington, D.C., 17:11.60; 8. Joshua Sohn, Pacific Palisades, California, 17:21.47; 9. John Sullivan, West Roxbury, 17:22.62.

Leading the women’s field was Larissa Park of Somerville, who placed 12th overall with a time of 17:26.96. Sheridan Wilbur, a student from La Salle Academy in Providence, was the women’s runner-up, finishing in 18:28.11 (17th overall).

Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School senior Jeremy Alley-Tarter of Oak Bluffs had the best time for a Vineyard runner, placing tenth overall with a time of 17:23.29. Ceili Brennan of Oak Bluffs had the fastest time among Vineyard women, finishing in 20:39.92, good for 61st overall.

Other local runners to make the top 50 were: 13. Kyle Joba-Woodruff, West Tisbury, 18:02.51; 14. Art Smith, Oak Bluffs, 18:11.56; 18. Bill Regan Jr., O.B., 18:34.95; 23. Michael Schroeder, W.T., 19:05.89; 34. Ben Tabah, Chilmark, 19:48.70; and 46. Reaan Steenkamp, Vineyard Haven, 20:24.45.

Three Vineyarders won their respective age groups. Along with Art Smith, who won the men’s 40-49 age group, Jack Lionette of Chilmark topped the boys 1-8 group with a time of 21:27.02, 94th overall and Jim Austin of Vineyard Haven was first among men 70-79, finishing 284th in 24:56.15.
