The Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA), used daily by hundreds of Island visitors and residents, will change schedules and routes to accommodate the South Road detour put in place to keep traffic from passing near the president’s vacation house in Chilmark.

There will be no bus service along South Road between West Tisbury town hall and Beetlebung Corner through the evening of Sunday, August 18, the VTA announced. The following route and schedule changes are also in effect.

The VTA will divert routes to provide service to Aquinnah via North Road and Menemsha Crossroads. Timed transfers that are scheduled to occur for Routes 6, 7 and 9 will not occur during the road closure.

Route 6 from Church Street in Edgartown (departs 00:12) will travel to the West Tisbury town hall (departs 00:38) and proceed up State Road, past the fairgrounds to North Road where it will continue on to Chilmark Town via Menemsha Crossroads, and then on to Aquinnah via State Road. There will be no pickups or drop-offs at the Chilmark Community Center by order of the Secret Service.

Route 3 from the Vineyard Haven SSA terminal (depart 00:07) will go directly to Aquinnah, via North Rd. The number 4 bus will service Old County Rd in West Tisbury and travel to the West Tisbury town hall for connections, as needed.

A bus will depart for Edgartown on the hour from the Gay Head Lighthouse, via Lighthouse Road , State Road, North Road, and the West Tisbury town hall. The 00:10 departure from the Lighthouse will go directly to Vineyard Haven via North Rd and State Road.

The 6 bus will depart the West Tisbury town hall at 00:31, and the Youth Hostel at 00:35.

Late night trips upon request will still be honored, the VTA said.

Regular service is expected to resume sometime after 4 pm, August 18.
