We are mostly happy to have the president appreciate our lovely island. Some Islanders and visitors enjoyed the drama of being checked out by the Secret Service last weekend even though they never saw the president or his family. Guess we can still be star-struck. Some were exasperated with all the fuss. It is sad to think it may be necessary, though the security and the road closing do seem to be a bit excessive.

The Stop & Shop is now in a two-story building. Why are people saying that replacing it with a new two-story building will block the view of the harbor? There is no view of the harbor there. The SSA removed the view with their shelter that never seems to be sheltering anyone.

We do need more parking in this town. Ever since the new parking setup threw away over a dozen parking places, the lot is full of cars circling around. I can tell you the only auto accident I have experienced on this Island was when a truck driver crashed into the back of my car while he was looking for a parking space instead of where he was going.

I think a bigger and cleaner Stop & Shop with lots of parking sounds like just what this town needs.

Did you know that one child in four living in our country doesn’t know where the next meal is coming from? Some 50 million Americans are struggling with hunger issues. The Vineyard Committee on Hunger and the M.V. Film Society sponsor the documentary film “A Place at the Table” this Wednesday at 7:30 pm. Hunger poses serious economic implications for our society. A discussion follows the film, led by Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern and longtime seasonal West Chop resident Dr. Mariana Chilton, both of whom are featured in the film.

Many visitors to the Island are fascinated with the historic site of the Rev. Thomas Mayhew’s farewell to his Indian congregations in 1657. He was to sail back to England on business when the ship was lost at sea. His Indian friends continued to visit the Place by the Wayside, leaving simple white pebbles in memory of their young preacher. It was 250 years before a large boulder was placed at the site which still draws visitors today. The memorial is now owned by the local DAR chapter, which hired Tea Lane Nursery was to dramatically clean and landscape it several years ago. Tea Lane Nursery, owned by Matt Tobin, continues to maintain the grassy area as a gift to the Island. Islanders and visitors should be very grateful to Matt and his workers at Tea Lane for the care and improvement of the historic memorial.
