Louise Marx of Chappaquiddick and Haverford, Pennsylvania, outshot the male competition to win the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club 2013 trap championship Sunday at the club range in Edgartown. She is the first female to win the club trap crown.

Ms. Marx, a longtime Chappy resident, is no newcomer to shooting. She is a member of the Valley Forge Gun Club, a women’s gun club — “husbands are allowed to shoot on Sundays once a month” — and is a regular on the range. “I like the fun competition,” she said about why she shoots.

On the trap range, Ms. Marx was all business. She brought her 12 gauge Remington shotgun to her shoulder in a well practiced motion and fired, breaking successive targets for a final score of 37 out of 50. Dick Carlson, 36 targets, and Brian Welch, 35, both from Oak Bluffs, finished second and third.

Ms. Marx said her husband, Sandy, who she also outshot Sunday, introduced her to the shooting sports. “And now he’s sorry he did,” she said with a laugh.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly referred to skeet, a different version of the shooting sports.
