For nearly 20 years, Paul Lazes Designs, Inc. designed renovations of apartments and townhouses in Manhattan and surrounding areas. When Mr. Lazes moved to Martha’s Vineyard 13 years ago with his family he shifted his career to cabinetry design and opened Rock Pond Custom Kitchens.
With his son grown and more time on his hands he has returned to his roots. He and his brother, Richard, are currently restoring a house located at 97 William Street (www.97williamstreet.com) in Vineyard Haven. Built in 1836, this stately, Greek Revival — the Berkshire House — is being entirely restored with 5 bedrooms, 4 baths plus 5 working fireplaces in the heart of the historic district.
Built originally as an inn and typical of the period, the building was divided into many small rooms. Mr. Lazes combined several of these rooms, removed a back staircase, eliminated a few hallways to improve the flow of the house, enlarged the rooms substantially, and brought light into the center of the home.
“Seven months into the project, all the heavy lifting has been completed, and it’s now about putting the icing on the cake,” Mr. Lazes said. “All the plumbing, electrical, and heating has been replaced and AC is now throughout the building. It is heavily insulated. The home has been sheet-rocked and the original plaster is being restored. We’re hoping we find an interested buyer who wants to select their own finishes so the house has their signature.”
