5K Race for the V.H. Library

The Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library will host the 16th annual 5K Race for the Library on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10 am. The course begins at the library and takes runners to the West Chop Lighthouse and back. A half-mile fun run for children aged 13 and under will precede the 5K at 9:45 am. Registration begins at 8:30 am. The race day entry fee is $25 for the 5K, $10 for the fun run with tee-shirt, and $5 with no shirt. The advance registration fee for the 5K is $20. Forms are available at the library or can be downloaded from vhlibrary.org. There will be prizes for winners in all age groups and a raffle.

Boys and Girls Club fall golf tourney

The 29th annual Martha’s Vineyard Boys and Girls Club golf tournament is Saturday, September 7 at the Edgartown Golf Club. The format is four-player scramble, with shotgun starts at 8 am and 1 pm, rain or shine. The tax-deductible entry fee is $100 per player, $400 per team. Entry includes 18 holes of golf, a player Gift, greens and cart fees, practice green time, continental breakfast, on-course contests and prizes, and trophies for the top three teams. Lunch is provided between morning and afternoon groups. Players must register by phone 508-627-5343 or in person at Edgartown Golf Club. The field is limited to 100 players (25 foursomes). Holmes Hole sailing

The Sunday race was cancelled due to lack of wind. In the Thursday night race, August 22, 13 boats lined up for the start with 15 knot southwest winds. Steve Besse sailed Apres around the 3.5-mile course fastest in 29:25, but Woody Bowman skippered the 21-foot catboat Julia Lee to the corrected time win in 26:08. Frank Desimone in Lagoonah was second in 30:22. Rounding out the top five were Kathy Logue and her all female crew in Rocinante III (31:25), Dan Culkin in Magic Time (31:40), and Stuart Halbert in Providence (31:43).

In other sailing news, the Moffett Race is September 7 and entries are coming in fast. The registration deadline is August 30. Entry forms and sailing instructions can be found on the club’s website holmeshole.org. For more information, call Kathy Logue at 508-693-7074.
