Last week the three ACBL clubs held special games in celebration of Millie Briggs, an ardent bridge player, artist, and tennis fan. Millie would have been 99 years old on August 31.
The Edgartown Bridge Club, at the American Legion on Monday, August 26, had 14 tables were in play. Overall winners were Mollie Whalen and Joe Ashcroft, followed by Art Spielvogel and Bari Boyer and Vicki Bologna and Jane Haley, in that order. Tied for fourth and fifth overall were Sandy and Michal Lindheimer and Charlie Harff and Renee Kaplan, respectively. Jim Kaplan and Bob Henry finished sixth overall.
Also placing in the North-South direction were Patsy McCornack and Helen Colvin in fifth and Anita Persson and Deirdre Ling in sixth. Also placing in the East-West direction were Joan Attianesa and Karen Sullivan in third, Louise Reed and Linda Smith in fourth, Mary Baker and Paul Howes in fifth, and Louise Marx and Jerri Grannis in sixth.
At the Martha’s Vineyard Bridge Club in Vineyard Haven on August 27, 10 tables were in play. Overall winners were Barbara Besse and Sandy Lindheimer, followed by Sari Lipkin and Carol Whitmarsh in second. Sari outplayed her son Michael Lipkin and his partner Anita Lee, who finished third. Audrey Egger and Patricia Taylor finished fourth overall, followed by Dan and Nancy Cabot in fifth and Ann Brown and Jim Kaplan in sixth. Also finishing in the North-South direction were Wally and Susan Epstein in third and Ency and Robert Fokos in fourth.
At the Island Bridge Club in West Tisbury on August 29, nine tables were in play. North-South winners were Sari Lipkin and Carol Whitmarsh. Sari again outdid her son Michael and his partner Anita Lee who tied for second and third place overall with Michael and Sandy Lindheimer. In fourth place overall were Don Nelson and Lou Winkelman, followed by Clara Hargrave and Stan Kissell in fifth. Also placing in the North-South direction were Barbara Silk and Bea Phear. Also placing in the East-West direction were Audrey Egger and Jim Kaplan in third, followed by Pam and Rich Peia in fourth.
On Saturday, August 31, at the Bridge Club of Martha’s Vineyard, seven tables were in play. North-South winners were Joanne Sanders and Nancy Jordan, followed by Patsy McCornack and Joan Perrine and Cheryl Neal and Duncan Walton. East-West winners were Abraham Seiman and Vicki Adelborgh, followed by Art Spielvogel and Clara Hargrave and Charity Randolph and Gerry Jones.
Several Island bridge players also competed in the ACBL regional tournament held in Warwick, Rhode Island. Gail Farrish and Charlie Harff and their teammates finished second in the compact knockouts, followed by the team Rhonda Cohen and Eric Strickoff. Joe Ashcroft and Mollie Whalen finished in third place. Also competing in pair events were Diana Dozier and Joan Perrine and Bea Phear and Cecilly Greenaway.
