Corporate sportswear giant Nike will donate 500 tee-shirts for runners registered in the first Gay Head 10K on Sunday, October 6. Nike is one of several corporate sponsors getting behind the race against time to raise money and awareness about the need to rescue the Gay Head lighthouse from the peril of eroding cliffs, according to a press release.
In July, the Save the Gay Head Lighthouse Committee announced plans for the inaugural Gay Head 10K road race with the expectation the event will become an annual fundraiser to help maintain the lighthouse once the committee has raised more than the estimated $3 million needed to safely relocate the historic structure.
“With such a short time to plan this first race we are very excited to have a major corporate sponsor like Nike step up with this gift along with our loyal local sponsors,” said Martha Vanderhoop, a member of the Save the Gay Head Lighthouse Committee and race coordinator.
Locally, many businesses have already answered the call for sponsorship including Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank, Cronig’s Market, the T-Bird Group, Wynn & Wynn, Conroy Apothecary, Vineyard Grocer, Alley’s, Crane Appliances, Vineyard Propane, Tea Lane Real Estate, and the Mansion House.
The committee is continuing to accept sponsorships at various levels through September 6. Donations of $500 or more earn a spot on the back of the Nike running shirts which will display the event logo and date on the front, according to event organizers.
“We are also still in need of volunteers to help with things like distributing numbers, staffing water stations and other race day responsibilities,” Ms. Vanderhoop said. “This will be a really fun way for students who are looking to fulfill their volunteerism commitment.”
The race is limited to 500 participants. Close to 100 have already registered. The fee to enter the race is $30. Registration is being conducted exclusively online at Active.com where a processing fee of $3.28 applies.
Limited parking will be available in the Aquinnah beach lot. Free shuttle buses will be made available from the Steamship Authority terminal in Vineyard Haven to meet the ferry arriving at 7:45 am and will also pick up Island runners who wish to park at the West Tisbury School at approximately 8:10 am.
