The Boston based Butter Band was formed by Timo Shanko and Garrett Dutton (a.k.a. G. Love) of the blues-rock and alternative hip-hop band G. Love and Special Sauce as a side project a few years back. But the group is starting to gain steam in the city's underground. "Butter is one of those perfect side projects that you wish was more of a permanent thing," Flatbread Company said in a press release for the Butter Band's show there on Friday, September 6. "The players come from an impressive and diverse assembly of bands you've heard of (and some you'll hear of soon).
In addition to the members of the Special Sauce, the Butter Band consists of players from Boston psychedelic group Ghosts of Jupiter, radio-hit machines the J. Geils Band, and Timo Shanko's other project Dub Apocalypse. The Butter Band's press release describes their music as a mix of "saucy funk, bare-boned blues, hook-driven rock, and hip jarring soul." Friday's show at Flatbread will be the Butter Band's debut on Martha's Vineyard, but they will be joined by Island venue veterans Dukes County Love Affair and Cape Cod folk-rocker John Beninghof.
