Goldie Silverman of Chilmark died on August 19. She was 94.

Goldie and her husband, Morris, fell in love with the Island in 1952, when they stayed at the old Youth Hostel at the airport, riding bikes with the first child seats most people had ever seen. They returned to the Island every summer until they built their own home in Chilmark in 1971, became year-round residents, and started Up-Island Realty, where Goldie wanted to be sure all her clients were happy in their homes, whether in a one-week rental or in a new residence on the Vineyard.

Goldie’s joy in the small and large moments of life and her love of those around her permeated her daily living. Whether she was working with special needs children in the Island schools, feeding a chickadee by hand at her bird feeder, or sitting on a bench making a new friend at the bus stop, her generosity and love touched those around her.

Goldie was the youngest of seven children, doted on by her parents, Rose and Aaron (Teitelbaum) Taylor, and by her six siblings, all deceased.

She is missed by many, including her children, Peter Silverman and his wife, Nola, and Jane Katch and her husband, Jed; by her grandchildren, Nate and Rebecca Silverman and Margaret and Hannah Katch; and by her great grandchildren, Aliah and Tessa Silverman.

One of Goldie’s special delights was to swim and watch the sunset at Menemsha. Her life will be celebrated on September 28 at sunset, at the beach at Menemsha (swimming is optional). If the weather does not cooperate, email jkatch@gmail.com for alternate plans.
