Over the Hill gang wins soccer opener
The Vineyard Football Club over 40 soccer team kicked off the fall season Sunday with a 2-0 away win over Medway. VFC competes in the New England Over The Hill Soccer League’s Masters Division 5 South.
VFC travelled with just 13 players but under the guidance of newly installed team coach Mark Taylor (former head of the Atlantic Football Club), the Vineyard side outplayed Medway for the full 90 minutes. Forward Ralph “Skip” Dostal scored both VFC goals and Andrew Worlock kept a clean sheet in the goal.
Martha’s Vineyard’s home opener is Sunday at Veterans Park vs. newly promoted United International of Randolph. Kick-off is at 9:30 am. U.I. went 9-1 last season in Division 6.
Martha’s Vineyard U-12 boys sink Mariner
Fall Cranberry travel soccer returned to the Island Saturday afternoon as the MV United U-12 boys hosted Mariner of Mattapoisett at the Park and Ride field in Vineyard Haven.
Josh Sampaio scored once in each half and Nick De Paula tallied to give MVU a 3-1 win.
VYT players win tourneys
Vineyard Youth Tennis players Hannah Rabasca and Victoria Scott were tournament winners last weekend. Victoria, playing in her first 14 and under event, held at the Westford Racquet Club, won her flight by scores of 6-2, 6-0, 6-3. Hannah won both of her matches by scores of 6-2, 6-3 in the girls 12 and under event at the Centre Court Club in Riverside, Rhode Island. As members of the Vineyard Youth Tennis Tournament Team, both girls are required to play a certain number of off-Island USTA tournaments.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters golf
Space is still available for the 25th Annual Howard W. Leonard Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Martha’s Vineyard this Sunday, September 15.
The Martha’s Savings Bank and Mink Meadows Golf Club are sponsoring the event with the help of Big Brothers Big Sisters program volunteers. Options to support this wonderful event include being a Hole Sponsor, sponsoring a golfer, or sponsoring a high school student at the event.
