Aubrey Ashmun and Alex Clark scored second half goals to lift the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School field hockey team to a 2-0 win Saturday in the home opener over the visiting Ursuline Academy Lady Bears.

The Vineyarders hemmed in the visitors from the start, firing 18 shots on the Ursuline goal.

“A great team effort,” Vineyard coach Lisa Knight said after the win. “We had a lot of shots on net and their goalie just came up with them, she just kept making saves.”

The Vineyard defense was rock solid all day. “Today, we played a great defensive game and kept the ball down in their end for the offense to put it in,” coach Knight said.

The Vineyarders are 2-1 heading into a big Eastern Athletic Conference match against Bishop Stang Tuesday at 3 pm in Oak Bluffs.
