Golf

The Vineyard golfers notched their first win of the season Tuesday afternoon at Swansea Country Club, 255-260, over Somerset Berkley in an Eastern Athletic Conference match. Senior co-captains Kat deBettencourt (39) and Matt Marchand (40) had the low scores. Freshman Zach Danz shot a 42.

Monday, the Vineyarders had a rare tie against Scituate at Widow’s Walk Golf Course. The match play contest ended 36-36. Coach Doug DeBettencourt cited freshman Chris Mayhew’s 7-2 win as the standout performance.

The Vineyarders (1-2-1) played Wednesday at Cape Tech and host Coyle Cassidy in an EAC match September 19 at 3 pm at Farm Neck.

Cross country

The Vineyarders made waves Saturday at the inaugural Big Wave Cross Country Invitational, held at Apponequet Regional High School in Lakeville. M.V. competed in a girls and boys 2.5-mile junior-senior race, and a freshman-sophomore race. In the upperclassmen event, the Vineyard girls put five runners in the top 10. Julia Neville was second in 16:48 and Lilly Neville took third in 17:51. Next were Grace Oslyn (4th, 18:11), Willoe Maynard (6th, 18:44), Willow Wunsch (8th, 18:51), and Lucy Norris (11th. 19:20).

Jeremy Alley-Tarter was third in the boys junior-senior race with a time 13:37. Isaiah Maynard was 11th in 14:13, followed by George Sykes (14th, 14:28); Thorpe Karabees (20th, 15:16); Tully McDonough (21st, 15:24); Galen Mayhew (29th, 15:47); Nick Fecitt (38th, 16:22); Chris Serpa (46th, 17:02); Ethan Lefevbre (47th, 17:12); and Evan Kristal (60th, 18:28).

Vineyard frosh Patrick Best pulled away at the two-mile mark to win the 2.5-mile freshman-sophomore race by ten seconds in 14:28. Nate D’Angelo (4th 14:45) and Silas Berlin (13th, 15:43) also made the top 15. For the girls, Eva Thors led the way, placing 6th in 20:01

September 11, the Purple harriers earned a split in an EAC meet against Coyle Cassidy. The Warrior boys, ranked sixth in the state, won 22-35, while the Vineyard girls prevailed, 15-48. Jeremy Alley-Tarter and Julia Neville won the varsity races.

Girls soccer

The Vineyard girls lost 2-0 Tuesday at Somerset Berkley in the EAC opener. The Vineyarders host Whitinsville Christian School Saturday at 1 pm and Coyle Cassidy of Taunton Tuesday at 3 pm.
