Did you know that Black Dog customers donated $5,000 during the months of August and September to Angels Helping Animals. They bring shelter dogs to be adopted by Islanders. The dogs come from all over, including the Virgin Islands. Leslie Hurd started this rescue program two years ago. Most of the dogs being offered for adoption are younger than a year and a half. Some sweet puppies were there for the celebration on Saturday.

Last Saturday the Black Dog presented a check for $5,000 to Leslie Hurd before a crowd of Vineyarders with their pets, gathered for a short parade, lively stories, and even a kissing contest. A gorgeous gray, black, and white Great Dane won my heart, but there was a lot of competition from a tiny Chihuahua to a bronze-colored boxer and a cuddly white poodle. Jay Lavoie, general manager of the Vineyard Haven stores, was the genial emcee. In July customer donations were collected for the Martha’s Vineyard Shelter.

Jonathan Scott wrote “The Early Colonial Houses of Martha’s Vineyard.” He is a professor of architectural history at Castleton State College in Vermont and a seasonal resident of Chilmark. This is a rare chance to learn more about our early history and to contribute to the church building fund. On Saturday at the West Tisbury Church at 6 pm he will share slides and his research on Island settlements in the 1600s. Donation is $15 for all this, plus hearty appetizers and apple crisp with ice cream. Reservations close Wednesday; call 508-693-2842.

Richard North Patterson will speak about his new Vineyard-based book, “Loss of Innocence,” sponsored by the West Tisbury Library and the MVFilm Society. The program begins at 7:30 pm next Thursday at the MV Film Center. Tickets are $25 at the box office or at mvfilmsociety.com.
