Mike McCarthy passes for 3,000 yards at BSU

Former MVRHS quarterback Mike McCarthy became the fourth QB in the history of Bridgewater State University to pass for more than 3,000 yards in a career, following the Bears 51-20 victory over Worcester State on Friday. McCarthy tied a school record, throwing for 236 yards and five touchdown passes to go with 122 yards rushing and a TD.

Mike is in his senior season at BSU where he has started every game over the previous three seasons. Last year he led the Bears to a berth in the NCAA Tourney with a 9-2 record.

September 14, Mike completed 10 of 14 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in a 41-24 BSU win over William Paterson. He also added 96 yards on the ground, including a pair of 1-yard touchdowns.

Michael Schroeder nearly takes the Cake

2013 MVRHS graduate Michael Schroeder, a freshman at Davidson College (N.C.) finished in second place last month in the school’s 74th annual Freshman Cake Race. The event marks the end of orientation week for incoming students. Runners followed a 1.3-mile course around the edge of the campus, with winners getting to choose at the finish line from among 150 cakes donated by community members and college staff.

Youth hockey

Before summer officially bade farewell on Sunday, the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey season got underway with two games Friday night in Foxboro. The Vineyard junior high team laced up the skates with Westwood and lost 5-1. Hunter Ponte scored his first Neponset Valley League goal for the Vineyard. Linemates Cabot Thurber and Jack Murray provided solid support, while goalie Zach Fullin kept the game competitive.

The Vineyard Peewees fared better and beat Canton 6-1. Hunter Meader rang up four goals to earn the Texas hat trick. Pete Gillis and Joe Serpa scored a goal apiece. Hoffie Hearn, Lauren Boyd, Alexa Pil, and Jackie Pizzano had assists. Kenny Hatt, Zack Vukota, and Jackson Pachico anchored the defense, while Aiden Marek was superb between the pipes.

Great Scott!, Victoria wins again

Victoria Scott of Edgartown won the girls 14 and under flight at the Lakeville Racquet Club last weekend by scores of 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Victoria, who trains at Vineyard Youth Tennis, is 6-0 and has won her past two tournaments since moving up to a higher age bracket.

Rotary charity golf

The Edgartown National Bank Rotary Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, September 30, at the Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown. The event benefits Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard and other Island charities. The tournament gets underway at 10 am with a shotgun start. Play is in a handicapped scramble format. Registration begins at 9 am. The fee is $150 per golfer and includes 18 holes of golf; a caddie or cart; putting, long drive, and closest to the pin contests; coffee and doughnuts; snacks and drinks on the course; a post-tourney buffet meal; a raffle and tournament prizes.

Tennis anyone?

The Vineyard Haven Tennis Foundation invites Islanders to play on the Reade courts at the end of Boxberry Avenue off Franklin Street, Tisbury, free of charge. Leased in the summer, the courts are made available to the public in the fall, winter, and spring.

Pee Wee tennis

Pee Wee tennis classes for players aged 3-6 are available this fall at the Workout and Vineyard Tennis Center, located at 24 Airport Road in West Tisbury. Classes with Susan Waldrop are Tuesdays and Fridays from 3-4 pm. To register, call 508-696-8000 or email: workout568@aol.com.

Jump-rope classes

Ongoing classes for the Island Whirlwinds jump-rope team are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 pm at the Workout and Vineyard Tennis Center. Girls and boys are welcome.
