Water orders that forced State Road Restaurant, and Chilmark Tavern to close last week were lifted by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Tuesday afternoon, after water sampling showed no bacterial contamination.

“Both Chilmark Tavern and State Road received clean test results for the samples taken Sunday and Monday,” said Jenna Petersiel, of the Chilmark Tavern.

“The water orders for both restaurants have been lifted,” DEP spokesman Ed Colletta said. “Samples that were taken on Sunday and Monday were all clean of any bacteria.”

The two restaurants were ordered closed on October 3, after routine testing showed higher than allowable levels of E. coli and total coliform bacteria.

The Chilmark Tavern, a seasonal restaurant is now closed for the year. State Road Restaurant plans to reopen on Thursday, October 10.
