Martha’s Vineyard remained unbeaten with ten wins and two draws heading into Thursday’s Eastern Athletic Conference match against Coyle Cassidy of Taunton. M.V. is 5-0 in the EAC with three league matches left.

The Vineyarders gained a measure of revenge Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Barnstable at Dan McCarthy Field. The Red Raiders drew 1-1 with MV on September 9.

Jason Lages netted a second half hat trick, scoring the first goal in the sixth minute from Ben Poole. Five minutes later, Lages got his second from Kane Araujo, following a corner. The third goal came in the 55th minute. Ben Poole placed a free kick toward the net from 25 yards out and Lages leaped, flicking the ball into the right corner with a perfectly placed header.

Barnstable scored from a corner kick two minutes later, becoming the first team to score on Vineyard soil this season.

After the victory, Vineyard coach Damon Burke said that his team is doing a better job of putting the pieces together following ugly wins over Bishop Feehan October 1 and Somerset Berkley (a 2-1 win with all three goals coming on penalty kicks) October 3.

“We’re rebounding, we’ve had some growing pains and a little bit of, how would I put it, honest talk about our feelings,” he said. “It seems to have worked because our movement is better, we did the things that we’ve been working on in practice and it’s paid dividends. It’s important to get that sorted out now rather than later.” In addition to Jason Lages, coach Burke cited the work of Evandro Medici and Kane Araujo.

The coach said that the win was also a boost for the program, following the death Monday night of former MVRHS player David Campbell. “It was quite a blow to everybody involved in the program,” he said. “On a day when you’re so sad…I’ve coached him since he was 10, it was good to get the win.” The coach said that the team will honor David’s memory in some way. “We haven’t figured out what exactly would be appropriate, but we’ll be doing something to memorialize him.”

Girls soccer

The Vineyard girls earned a confidence-boosting point in a 0-0 home draw with Somerset Berkley on October 3. Last season, the Lady Raiders beat the Vineyarders twice by a 6-0 count.

“Our kids played inspired soccer and we’re a much stronger team now,” Vineyard coach Richard Bennett said. “They put pressure on us, but our defense really held together well, Cana [Courtney] was again outstanding in goal and we created a couple of scoring opportunities; we could have stolen a win out of it.”

The Vineyarders (3-5-1) are next at home Monday at 3 pm against Mashpee.

Field hockey

The Vineyarders wrapped up the home schedule Tuesday afternoon with a senior day EAC match against Somerset Berkley. The Lady Raiders came into the contest ranked 14th in the Boston Globe state poll.

Lisa Knight’s team lost 2-0 but more than held their own against the visitors.

Lisa Knight’s team lost 2-0 but more than held their own against the visitors.

“We played great, I thought we played phenomenal,” coach Knight said. “Their second goal came with a minute to go, but for the most part I thought we dominated the first half. I think they were a little nervous (being a team with a home turf field playing on grass), but they’re a great team.”

The Vineyarders (6-5-2) lost to visiting Natick, 1-0, Saturday and tied EAC foe Bishop Stang, 0-0, October 3 in North Dartmouth. Martha’s Vineyard needs four points from its final five away matches to make the state tournament.

Following the varsity game, the jayvees tied the Lady Raiders 1-1. Hanna Kim scored the Vineyard goal. The freshmen team won, 4-0, at Barnstable. Kylie Hatt (2), Pearl “Jam” Vercruysse, and Lacey Dinning scored for M.V.

Cross country

The Vineyard harriers swept Bishop Stang in an EAC meet October 3 in Oak Bluffs. The girls improved to 4-0 with a 25-33 win, while the boys romped 15-50 to even their record at 2-2.

Julia Neville won the girls race with a time of 21:07. Also in the points were Lilly Neville (4th, 22:48); Grace Oslyn (5th, 22:49); Willow Wunsch (7th, 23:35); and Lucy Norris (8th, 23:50).

The Vineyard boys swept the top five spots. Jeremy Alley-Tarter led the way at 17:35, followed by George Sykes (18:14); Patrick Best (18:29); Isaiah Maynard (19:14); and Nate D’ Angelo (19:24).

The Vineyard girls and boys raced Wednesday afternoon in Attleboro against league powerhouse Bishop Feehan.

Golf

The Vineyard golfers defeated Cape Cod Tech 51-21 in match play format at Farm Neck on October 2 and followed up the next day with a 252-267 win over Somerset Berkley. Monday, host Falmouth edged the Vineyarders, 264-267, at Falmouth Country Club. Doug DeBettencourt’s team must win its final two matches, October 10 at Farm Neck against Scituate and Friday at Vineyard Golf Club vs. Sturgis West Charter School, to qualify for the state tournament.
