Join the Crop Walk for hunger

On Sunday, October 27, Islanders will join in the 23rd annual Crop Walk to provide food and other necessities of life for hungry people on the Island, in the USA, and overseas. The walk begins at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven and proceeds to Oak Bluffs and back. It is supported by the M.V. Clergy Association, the Vineyard committee on Hunger, the Island Food Pantry, and young people from Island schools and others, according to a press release.

Support cars will be provided to help as needed along the way. The walk begins at 2 pm. Walkers are asked to check in at St. Augustine by 1:25 pm Sunday and are encouraged to get people to support them.

Last year the walkers and their supporters raised $23,447 which brought the 22 year total raised to $359,085, Rev. Alden Besse said. This year a group of Islanders are pledging 20 cents for every dollar the walkers raise. For more information and forms for sponsoring walkers, contact Mr. Besse or Phil Dietterich. Call 508-693-3930 for more information or to sponsor a walker.

Sagamore Bridge lane restrictions in place

Travel lanes on the Sagamore Bridge were reduced to one lane in each direction starting on Tuesday, October. The lane closures will be in effect for the next several weeks Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am and 4:30 pm, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. All travel lanes will be open each night and weekends. The lane restrictions are necessary to perform maintenance work on the bridge above the roadway.

Pray for peace

Prayers of Peace, an interfaith service, will take place 4 pm, Friday, November 1 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Chapel. The non-denominational gathering will include prayer, meditation, reflections and readings, music, and periods of silence.

Presenters from a range of faiths and disciplines will offer a variety of perspectives on peace, according to a press release.

Cheryl Burns of the Threshold Choir will teach three short, comforting songs. Yoga teacher Martha Abbott will lead participants in gentle arm movements and breathing. Also on the program are poet Michael West with a meditative reading and Peggy McGrath explaining and leading Contemplative or “Centering” Prayer, a Christian meditative practice. Holly Wayman’s flute music will enhance the peaceful atmosphere and the Rev. Alden Besse will offer prayers and a closing blessing.

“So many people and faiths have their own practice of peace,” said Carolyn Eddy of Grace Church who will facilitate the gathering. “This will bring everyone together, so we can appreciate and honor those practices and send them out to the world, and to lead to a sense of hope and peace in our own lives.”

Reflecting on peace, Ms. Eddy said it is not just the ceasing of war. “It allows us to experience the sense of peace that is everyone’s birthright.”

Everyone is welcome to attend. Island clergy, and the artists, musicians, and spiritual community of the Vineyard will sponsor the gathering.
