Looking ahead to Red Stocking

To the Editor:

The 2013 Red Stocking applications will be available by October 25 at various locations around the Island. Red Stocking has been providing clothing, food, and toys for Vineyard children in need from birth through grade eight. Applications may be picked up at any elementary school, at most branches of Vineyard banks, and also at the Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA, the Wampanoag Tribal Headquarters, MV Insurance Co. in Vineyard Haven, the Department of Families and Children, Early Childhood offices at MV Community Services, and at the Food Pantry. Applications also can be obtained at the Health Care Access Office in Oak Bluffs, where assistance for Portuguese speaking families is available. We encourage families to apply early, preferably by November 20, in order to receive a food voucher before Thanksgiving.

This year Red Stocking will be operating from the basement hall at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church on Franklin Street in Vineyard Haven. We are extremely grateful to the rector and parishioners of Grace Episcopal Church, who have so graciously hosted the Red Stocking program for several decades. Last year we provided for more than 430 children, and we simply now need more space. We are equally grateful to Father Nagle and the Good Shepherd Parish for their offer of the basement hall at St. Augustine’s.

Wrapping will be done on Monday through Wednesday, December 9–11, beginning at 9 am, at St. Augustine’s. Volunteer wrappers may call Patricia Carlet at 508-693-3197 to let her know when they are available. Distribution will be on Friday, December 13. If there are questions, you may call Kerry Alley at 508-693-2324 or Lorraine Clark at 508-693-0725. Contributions may be sent to Susan Wallo at Box 600, Edgartown, MA 02539.
