The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School’s 14th Annual Scarecrow Festival attracted a record number of entrants and over 85 participating businesses, from Chilmark to Edgartown. The businesses make donations to the school in exchange for having a scarecrow installed in front of their establishment for the week surrounding Halloween.

Charter School families create the majority of the scarecrows, but anyone can contribute to the fun by making a scarecrow. The builder of each scarecrow qualifies for a chance to win prizes that include a new iPad.

This year’s them, “Musical Scarecrows,” inspired tuneful creatures ranging from Dolly Parton to Beethoven to Katy Perry that have popped up across the Island. Schroeder, the Peanuts pianist, created by Megan and Warren Adams and family, even has a soundtrack that is motion-activated when shoppers enter The Bunch of Grapes on Main Street in Vineyard Haven.
