To the Editor:
I've noticed that whenever there is an article about the budget increase for Island schools, the very next line says that the reason for this is the special needs students. This might be true, but it hurts my feelings every year.
The Vineyard community has in every other way been extraordinarily inclusive of my family. Is this because my son arrived here as an adult and you haven't been obliged to pay for his education? I'd like to think not. I'd like to think that this is an amazing place, with a wide open heart, where we support one another to the best of our ability, and no one in need is made to feel "less than."
