Workshop next week to prepare students for December ACT test

The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School (MVPCS) has been approved to be the first ACT test center on Martha’s Vineyard. The ACT test, an alternative to the SAT college test, is used to assess a student’s academic readiness for college. Colleges encourage students to take both, and use the highest test score to evaluate prospective students for admission.

The first ACT test at the Charter School is scheduled December 14. A minimum of six students is required to conduct each test. All interested Island students are welcome to sign up online at www.actstudent.org/regist/centers.

The registration deadline is Friday, November 8. Late registration runs from November 922.

An ACT training workshop to help students prepare for the test will be held from 4 to 6 pm on Monday, November 11, followed by weekly classes on Wednesdays. All are free.

Galen Ryley, the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative (MVYLI) college prep program coordinator, will conduct the workshop and classes at a private residence in Vineyard Haven. To RSVP and receive directions, email mvyouthleaders@gmail.com. For more information, call 508-693-1480.

Up until now, Vineyard students had to travel off Iisland to take the ACT test at Falmouth High School. MVYLI worked for two years to bring the test to students on Island.
