Over the Hill Gang promoted
Vineyard Football Club (VFC) the Island entry in the New England Over The Hill Soccer League finished the regular season at 8-2, clinching the Division 5 Masters South championship and earning promotion next spring to Division 4. VFC was promoted following a tie between Medway and second place United International. The Vineyard side will first settle Division 5 bragging rights in a playoff with North champion Andover Gold and Central champion Albania Eagles of Boston. VFC plays at Andover on Sunday.
MV U-12 boys reach Soccerween semis
The MV United U-12 Boys travel soccer team played Sunday in the 2013 MPS Soccerween tournament, held at the Mass Youth Soccer Complex in Lancaster.
The Vineyard side topped their group before losing 3-1 to the MPS Crusaders Elites in the semifinals. Morgan Estrella netted the single goal for the Purple and Black.
The one-day tournament was open to elite club and town teams from across the state.
Placed in the intermediate group along with three elite club teams, the Vineyard boys opened up with a sluggish defeat against the MPS Bulldogs Elite team ranked 4th in state.
United got in the win column the next time out with a 2-1 win over the MPS Sugar Hill Gang. Tim Wallis scored in the sixth minute and Morgan Estrella made it 2-0 two minutes later.
The Vineyard closed out the group stage with a 4-2 win over the South Coast Sting, ranked fourth in Rhode Island. The Ocean Staters converted a penalty kick in the opening minute but MVU struck back with two goals in two minutes, courtesy of Ben Taylor. Jack Holmes followed up with a well struck volley to put the Purple and Black up 3-1. Taylor closed out the scoring three minutes from time to complete his hat trick.
The Soccerween roster included goalkeepers Colby Zarba and JoJo Bonneau; defenders Patrick Flaherty, Daniel Bonneau, and Jack Holmes; midfielders Josh Sampaio, Jaiden Edelman, Tim Wallis, Finn Monahan, and Morgan Estrella; and forwards Robe Della Torre, Noah Garcia, Josh Dix, and Ben Taylor.
VYT tennis exhibition Friday
Vineyard Youth Tennis will host its monthly Junior Tennis Exhibition Series Friday at 6:30 pm. Victoria Scott of Edgartown and Lizzie Williamson of Edgartown will play. Both are members of the VYT Tournament Team and have high New England rankings. Children and families are encouraged to come out and attend the event. Call 508-693-7762 if you have any questions.
In other youth tennis news, Kelly Klaren of West Tisbury won the girls 14 and under flight at the Riverside Rhode Island Tournament last weekend by scores of 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Victoria Scott placed second in her flight with scores of 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
The John Gibson Memorial Men’s Ice Hockey League fall playoffs begin November 14, with the second seeded Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School team taking on the third-seeded Pirates at 9 pm and the top-seeded Sharks skating against fourth-seeded Max Fitness at 10 pm. The regular season came to a close November 7 with MVRHS defeating Max Fitness, 5-1, and the Bucs beating the Sharks, 4-2.
