Jacob Cardoza, seen here carrying the ball vs. Norwell, November 1, had a strong game against Archbishop Williams.

Archbishop Williams and its powerful running game proved too much for the Vineyard varsity football team Friday evening in Braintree. Kylan Philbert-Richardson ran for 195 yards as the Bishops prevailed, 32-21.

Both teams had their respective ground games in high gear in the first quarter. The Bishops took a 6-0 lead as Philbert-Richardson capped off a 65-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run. The extra-point was wide left. The Vineyarders responded with an eight-play, 67-yard drive of their own. Isaac Higgins, Jacob Cardoza, and Ben Clark chewed up yardage and Tony Breth finished off the drive with an 18-yard TD pass to Deshawn James. James Sashin booted the PAT to put M.V. in front, 7-6.

Derek Khnaizer put the hosts back on top, 12-7, with a 16-yard TD run early in the second quarter.

The first half came to a dramatic close. With the Vineyarders facing a 3rd and 13 from their own 19, Casey Earle intercepted Tony Breth and ran the ball back for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was good to put Williams ahead 20-7. On the ensuing kickoff, Deshawn James put the Purple right back in the game with a 70-yard TD return. The teams went to the half with the Bishops up 20-13.

Archbishop Williams scored a decisive blow on the first drive of the third quarter as Kylan Philbert-Richardson raced 63 yards to the endzone to make it 26-13.

Marcus McBean put the Bishops ahead 32-13 with a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Vineyarders scored the game’s final points on an eight-yard pass from Tony Breth to Tyler Paulson, and a two-point conversion.

Jacob Cardoza finished the game with 58 yards rushing and Ben Clark added 45 more. Kyle Stobie led the Vineyard defense with 12 tackles. Andrew Jacobs-Walsh had 10.
