Vineyard disc golfers conquer Nantucket

A group of some 20 Vineyard disc golfers traveled to Nantucket Saturday with discs in hand and soundly defeated their island rivals in a Ryder Cup style challenge. The victorious Vineyard team had a copper cup made for the occasion and hoisted it in triumph, upon returning to Vineyard Haven on the same ferry as the Island Cup winning football team.

The Vineyard squad included: Alex Maloney, Andrew McCurdy, Paul Cotton, Caleb Nicholson, Cody Brewer, Lucas Brewer, Stephen Perry, Ray Perry, Douglas Scott Cummings, Jake Gifford, Harrison Holmes, Zachary Greer, Chris Grazioso, and Vincent Padalino.

Matt Cromwell is Top Gun in Fall Shoot

Matt Cromwell of Edgartown bested 11 challengers Sunday to take first place and Top Gun honors in the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club’s Fall Shoot. To bring home the coveted plaque, participants had to score highest in three categories: Over The Shoulder, Bull’s-Eye, and Standing Deer.

Individual prizes were also awarded to winners in the following disciplines; Bull’s-Eye: Mike Ferry, West Tisbury; Over The Shoulder: Cooper Gilkes, Edgartown; Standing Deer: Cliff Meehan, Edgartown.

The event gives shooters a chance to site in their guns for the upcoming deer season. While competing in the various events throughout the day, many competitors took home canned hams donated by Cronig’s Market.

Black Powder Shoot, December 15

The Rod and Gun Club will hold the annual Black Powder Shoot Sunday, December 15, from 10 am to 2:30 pm. The event, which enables primitive firearms shooters to prepare for their hunting season, is open to the public. Both traditional and modern firearms may be used. Guns with scopes will be allowed. Prizes will be awarded for both primitive and modern black powder firearms.

For the sixth consecutive year, the club will present the Bill Nicholson Award plaque for the outstanding black powder participant. The recipient’s name will also be engraved on the club’s perpetual plaque. The award was established and sponsored by Bill’s longtime friend, Eddie Belisle. Refreshments will be available for competitors and viewers throughout the day. For more information, call Dick Carlson at 508-939-0909.
