The wonderful Christmas lights in Ocean Park delight Islanders and visitors alike each year with a dazzling display of holiday cheer.

By manipulating the way the colorful decorations are recorded on the sensor of a digital camera, a photographer can create abstract views that show Ocean Park in different light.

The darkness allows a photographer to shoot long exposures, essentially leaving the lens open for several seconds, or longer, instead of the usual fraction of a second that it takes to make most pictures in bright daylight.

Moving the camera or the lens while the shutter is open “paints” light on the sensor, with effects that sometimes suprise even the photographer.
