Oak Bluffs

We seem to be in a limbo of weather as I look out one window and admire the red berries on the holly tree and then when I look out the south-facing windows I am greeted by yellow forsythia peaking out from what remains of the foliage. Some mornings the birds songs sound like spring but at other times the cold creeps up from the ground working the chill up into my bones, reminding me that it is winter after all. So I head back into the house where the wood stove fire wraps its warmth around me like the warmest of blankets. I know that the cold days will soon outnumber the warmer ones before spring arrives again. Time will go quicker if we partake of some of the many activities that are available.

Red Stocking is special to Martha’s Vineyard. More than ever before, a growing number of families are in need and will rely on the Red Stocking Fund. At the Oak Bluffs School the staff and students are fostering the true spirit of giving. For many years the Oak Bluffs School has helped the Red Stocking Fund. Each year contributions have totaled hundreds of dollars. The schoolchildren are asked to bring in donations large and small. This whole week is designated as Red Stocking week. The giving is made more fun by asking for different coins on different days. This could lend itself to many mathematical investigations and hopefully will inspire children to give whatever spare change they can donate. No donation is too small. Checks should be made payable to the Oak Bluffs School.

Oak Bluffs EMS have found their own special way to help out the Red Stocking Fund. On Saturday, December 14, they will be stuffing an ambulance and their rehab bus with unwrapped toys for the fund to help Island children have a Merry Christmas. Please bring a toy or two and come by the Nelson W. Amaral Fire Station and help these dedicated people reach their goal in once more helping out others.
