To the Editor:
Holiday spirit got off to a special start when the Island community gathered for the annual Oak Bluffs Tree Lighting this past week.
The weather was perfect. There were lights, garlands and bows galore, thanks to Mark and Bernie Crossland, Friends of Oak Bluffs, and the Oak Bluffs Highway Department. The centerpiece, a magnificent tree, a gift from Paul Mahoney, was lit at the appropriate moment by the chairman of the board of selectmen, Walter Vail. Traditional carols, played beautifully by the Vineyard Band Brass Ensemble, and the jolly jingles that filled the Dreamland Ballroom, complements of the Brian Weiland Band, made this a night to remember. Thanks to Mike Santoro for all that hot chocolate and to JB Blau for the use of the elegant ballroom.
A very special thanks to the O.B. Firemen’s Civic Association that provided the most exciting visit from St. Nick, who, with his helpers, took all the food donations to the Island Food Pantry. Most of all, a giant thank-you to the OBPTO for their help in bringing everyone together and with donations of food.
I would be remiss not to thank the Oak Bluffs School art teacher, Kim O’Conner, and her students K through four for the spectacular mural that lights up the Corner Store window (compliments of Luke DeBettencourt) and helps remind us just what holiday spirit is all about.
