David M. Allen of Oak Bluffs, working as the Country Representative, South Africa, for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, attended the official State Memorial for Nelson Mandela at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg, with Gates Foundation officials Geoffrey Lamb and Mark Suzman. Prior to joining the Gates Foundation, Dr. Allen served as an advisor to the South African Department of Health, the Director of the CDC Global AIDS Program for South Africa, the Regional Director of the Global AIDS Program for Southern Africa, and the Director of the Global AIDS Program, Caribbean Regional Office.

Wesley Theodore Mott of Oak Bluffs has a new book, “Ralph Waldo Emerson in Context (Literature in Context),” published by the Cambridge University Press. The book is a collection of newly commissioned essays mapping the vital contextural backgrounds to Emerson’s life and works. It is a reference source for fuller understanding of this seminal American writer. Mr. Mott is a professor of American literature at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the recipient of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Society of Distinguished Achievement Award.
