There is a lot going on in Aquinnah this weekend. Many parties and crafts and an open studio. People also keep giving me reports of more snowy owl sightings. David and Saskia Vanderhoop saw one at West Basin and both Lisa Vanderhoop and Albert Fischer have posted beautiful pictures of them on their Facebook pages. Apparently sightings of these birds are rare in these parts, but we have some tenacious bird watchers and photographers in this town.

Joanie LeLacheur will have a presentation and sale in her studio at 42 Old South Rd. on Friday, December 20, from 9 am to 6 pm and again on Saturday, the 21st, from 9 am to 4 pm. It will feature her wampum and other shell adornments as well as original clothing made from kimono fabrics designed by Minor Knight. You can email her at for more information.

This Saturday, 3–5 pm, at the Gay Head Lighthouse there will be a Winter Solstice Celebration of the Light Party sponsored by The Save the Gay Head Lighthouse Committee. You can get into the lighthouse for free, there will be music, refreshments and most intriguing of all…surprises.

Saskia and David Vanderhoop will also be hosting their Solstice potluck and music jam at their home, 5 Church St. The party will start at sunset and is billed as a celebration of music, nature, and True North to rekindle the light within. There will be fires, lanterns, a torch walk, great food and of course the wonderful creative people of Aquinnah. The schedule is as follows:

4 pm – Rehearsal if you or your kids plan to perform a song.

4:30 pm – Bow drill lighting of fires and torch walk which will take place outside.

5 pm – Potluck dinner (back inside).

6 pm – Live music (also inside).

7 pm – Dancing (again inside).

There will be fires tended all night. Kindly RSVP, especially if you or your child wants to perform. Call Saskia at 508-645-2008.

On Saturday at the library the craft will be cookie decorating from 12 noon to 3 pm. I know there is a lot happening on Saturday. but everything is timed in such a way that you could come to the library and decorate cookies, head up to the Lighthouse for the Solstice Celebration and then arrive at Saskia and David’s for the big Solstice Party. You would probably be exhausted at the end of it. but isn’t that the point of the holidays? To cram so much fun into each day that come New Year’s Day you can barely function? The following Saturday there will be a movie for kids. The wrapping paper decorating craft was wonderful and I now have all my wrapping paper for the gifts I have not yet bought.

The Aquinnah Christmas party is Monday at 5 pm. Come one, come all and please bring some food with you. There will be a special visit by a big man in a red suit who will arrive on a fire truck with gifts for all the kids. If you would like to help with the party in any way let me know.

Happy Birthday to Claus Smith who turns six tomorrow. Happy Birthday to Theresa Manning whose birthday is Sunday. Yossi Monahan turned eight last Monday and his parents threw him a great party at the MV Ice Arena this past Saturday. It was a lot of fun watching kids and parents skating and messing around on the ice. I was very impressed with everyone’s skating ability and their ability to stand the infernal cold of the Arena. There was pizza, cupcakes, and gumballs and then a very snowy ride home.
