Vineyard swimmers meet Red Raiders
The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School swim team raced against a tough Barnstable team December 18 at the YMCA. The Red Raiders prevailed, 94-46, in the girls meet and took the boys contest, 106-41.
In the individual events, Galya Walt won the girls 100-yard Butterfly, and placed second in the 200-yard Freestyle. Patrick Best won the boys 50-yard Freestyle and finished second in the 200-yard Freestyle. Also finishing second were Captain Liam Cosgrove in the 100-yard butterfly; Liam Cosgrove, Patrick McCarthy, Tucker Cosgrove and Derrick Devine in the 200-yard Medley Relay; and Liam Cosgrove, Patrick Best, Tucker Cosgrove and Derrick Devine in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay. Many other Vineyarders scored points and had excellent races.
The Vineyarders next compete January 7 at Nauset. The swimmers return to the Vineyard for their final two home meets, on January 13 versus Pope John Paul II of Hyannis and January 16 against Sandwich.
Girls travel hoopsters improve to 6-0
The Vineyard eighth-grade girls travel basketball team won twice over the weekend to remain undefeated at 6-0. Saturday at home, the girls downed Lakeville 42-18. Molly deBettencourt and Kat Roberts each scored 12 points against Lakeville’s 2-3 zone defense. Devin Hill added eight points.
M.V. traveled Sunday to Nauset and won handily, 43-19. Molly deBettencourt had a stellar game at both ends of the court, with 11 points, five blocks, and a passel of assists and rebounds. Devin Hill was top scorer with 12. Clare Naughton had 10 points and several blocks.
The girls are back on the court on January 4 at home against Falmouth in a battle of unbeatens. Tip-off is at 12:50.
Skating into the New Year
Martha’s Vineyard Arena is hosting Skate into the New Year 2014 on Wednesday, January 1 from 2 to 5 pm. The Arena has organized the open house event as a way to celebrate and say thank you to the Island community. The event is open to all and free to the public. For more information, call 508-693-4438.
