Martha’s Vineyard took the first of two meetings against Eastern Athletic Conference archrival Bishop Feehan, winning 54-47 in Attleboro Saturday. The Vineyarders (5-1) won their fifth consecutive game behind a superb team effort. Alex GordonBeck was relentless, scoring six points, hauling down seven rebounds, and grabbing three steals. Ben Poole and Malik Johnson were also defensive standouts.

The Vineyarders trailed midway through the second quarter but used an 8-1 run to lead 27-23 at the half. M.V. tightened its grip by holding Feehan to six points in the third quarter.

“It was our most sustained effort of the season, with very few lapses of energy,” coach Mike Joyce said.

Deshawn James led the Vineyard offense with 18 points. Tim Roberts had 11 points to go with 11 rebounds. Navardo Anderson added nine points. “Tim, Deshawn, and Navardo always have got to have strong games for us to win,” coach Joyce said, but when Alex, Malik, and Ben play as well as they did, our team is very difficult to beat.”

The Vineyarders are off until January 12, when they host EAC foe Coyle Cassidy at 4:30 pm.
