Aquinnah

Winter in Aquinnah. It snowed, it rained, it got really cold and then rained more, it got warm (in the 50s!), and then cooled again. The wind whipped along as it does, sounding so cruel at times. In Menemsha a basking shark that had been caught in a fisherman’s net washed up on the shore. On Saturday there were three big bins of Legos for kids to play with and Rodeo Purves-Langer, and Waylon and Amos Sauer built for hours until their moms and the librarians had to make them stop and put away the Legos because the library was closing.

There will be a memorial potluck on Saturday, 4–7 pm, at co-housing, for Donna Carol, previous resident of Gay Head. The event is being organized by Joan LeLacheur, Aquinnah Witham, Ken Wentworth, and Liz Witham.

Correction: Okay folks the third time’s a charm, if you would like to get on the email list for affordable housing in Aquinnah, email Carolyn Feltz at aqhcpc@comcast.net. I swear this is the correct email address.

The Save the Gay Head Lighthouse Committee announced this week that it had been awarded two new grants totaling $10,000. The money will help fund the Geotechnical Engineering Project at the lighthouse site. $5,000 is from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and $5,000 is from the Farm Neck Foundation. Congratulations to us all.

The first Multi-Arts Installation of 2014 at Pathways will be held this Saturday. Arts & Scripts: Works in Creation Across Island Now! Will be held from 7 to 9 pm at the Pathways space in the Chilmark Tavern. This Collaborative Arts Installation will include work currently in process, so some of the work presented will be unfinished. Art mediums included are: visual arts, videography, performing arts, spoken word, poetry, music, and more. Both Joan LeLacheur and her husband Richard Skidmore of Aquinnah will have work in the installation. There is an artbar at the space that opens at 6 pm, where you can come and work on your piece, and there is no admission fee for the evening.

Oh thank goodness, it’s that time of year again. The Aquinnah Library will be granting fine amnesty to patrons, through the months of January and February. Patrons are invited to clear their overdue fines by bringing in a (non-expired) non-perishable item for the Island Food Pantry. This program applies only to late fees, not to lost or damaged library items. Here is a list of acceptable items: Oil (Canola, Olive, Corn, etc.), condiments, coffee, tea, hot cocoa mix, complete packaged dinners (Taco dinner kits, Rice-a-Roni, Hamburger Helper, Rice Pilaf, etc.), sardines, canned fish, canned meat, canned beef stew, nuts, paper products (Kleenex, toilet tissue, etc.), personal care items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo). They cannot accept perishable items.

The Chilmark School PTO and Outing Program fundraiser will be held Saturday, February 8, 7–11 pm, at the Chilmark Community Center. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will perform and there will be a live and a silent auction. Desserts will be served and there will be dancing. Admission is $15, and this is a really fun evening. If you would like to donate an item or a service for the auctions please contact Katie Carroll who conveniently writes the Chilmark Column and so her number and email address are right next to her picture.

Goodbye to Judie Jardin who is retiring from the Town Treasurer position at Aquinnah Town Hall. Judie has served for the past several years and is leaving to relocate and be closer to her family. Thank you Judie for all your service and best of luck to you in all your new endeavors.

Congratulations to Emerson Mahoney and Pearl Vercruysse who both made the MVRHS Honor Role. Emerson is in tenth grade and Pearl is in ninth. Emerson’s sister, Ella just returned to school in New York City after being here for her winter break. She spent a good part of her winter break helping her mom, Juli with scalloping. Ella is attending the School of Visual Arts.

Let’s go Patriots! Here’s hoping we will be at the Superbowl this year.

Just 23 days until Chilmark Chocolates opens again!
