Vineyard girls suffer first hockey defeat

The Martha’s Vineyard girls varsity hockey team suffered its first defeat of the season Sunday, losing 5-1 to host Scituate. The Vineyarders are 4-1-1 and 3-0-1 in the Southeast Mass. Girls Hockey League (SEMGHL).

The lone bright spot of the game belonged to junior Haven Huck, who scored her first varsity goal at 8:05 of the second period, assisted by Callie Jackson. The goal cut the Lady Sailors’ lead to 2-1. The Vineyarders had little time to celebrate as Scituate made it 3-1 eight seconds later, scoring off the ensuing face-off. The Lady Sailors put the game away with two goals in the first five minutes of the third period.

“It was eye-opening for us,” Vineyard coach John Fiorito said. “We knew we didn’t play well. We have a team that can respond, and we get to play them again this weekend.”
