The third annual Winter Classic tennis tournament was held January 11-12 at the Vineyard Tennis Center. Ten doubles teams competed in the event, which benefited the Island Food Pantry.

Doug Cooper and Sandi Nadelstein won the men’s doubles tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Skip Dostal and Patrick Caine. The champs previously gutted out a tough 6-4, 6-4 decision over Ryan Sawyer and Todd Hollister.

Ken Armsted and Tony Omer were the men’s consolation winners, outlasting the father and son team of Steve and Spencer Pogue, 6-1, 2-6, and 10-5 in the decisive tie-breaker.

In women’s play, sisters Molly and Paige Pogue prevailed in a round-robin format. The Pogues first edged Marney Gavley and Maggie Mae 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) and sealed the title with a nail-biting 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over Kathy Pogue and Susan Garret.

The next event on the VTC schedule is the Love at First Set tournament on February 8-9.

Team tennis

Friday at the Vineyard Tennis Center, the team tennis season continued. The top team, Scared Hitless, had the night off as did Team 2. In the first match of the evening, a makeshift Team 5 defeated the Fireballs, who failed to gain ground on the league leaders after coming into the match a half game back. In the nighcap, Shawn Schofield, Ann Williamson, Susie Schofield, and Jim Eddy led Team 4 to a victory over winless Team 3.

The current standings have Scared Hitless on top at 4-1, followed by Team 2, Team 5, and the Fireballs, all 3-2 and separated only by total games won. Team 4 is 3-3 and Team 3 is 0-6.
