The MV Arena was a hockey hotbed over the weekend and not just for the varsity and youth programs. The junior varsity boys played Friday night, while the jayvee girls skated on home ice for the first time Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

The boys had a tough time against Dennis-Yarmouth, losing 6-0, but the girls came away with a hard-fought split.

The Vineyard opened up against a tough Needham team and lost out late in the third period by a 3-1 count. Lee Heyman staked the Vineyarders to a 1-0 first period lead by firing in a shot from the slot, assisted by Arianna Peters. The Vineyard’s top line of Heyman, Alice Keenan, and Emilia Cappelli were a consistent threat to the Rockets throughout the game.

Julia Bettencourt was stellar between the pipes and got ample support from her defensemen, especially Mikayla Tinus and Shannon O’ Connor.

The hard work paid off Sunday morning as the girls notched their second win of the season, 2-1 over Scituate. Alice Keenan scored the game-winner late in the third period. Lee Heyman scored the first Vineyard goal. Julia Bettencourt was the winning netminder.
