I forgot to mention this last week. There is a special program this afternoon at 1:30 at the Tisbury Senior Center. That is if it doesn’t get cancelled by the predicted snow storm. Chuck Cotnoir, Beth Toomey, and Jim Klingensmith will tell you how to be prepared for an emergency in case of severe storms, power outages, and heavy winds. Call 508-696-4205 for more.

You have a chance for a special treat because the Vineyard Haven Library won a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant is for a free series called America’s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway. The six-week film and discussion program starts next Thursday night, Jan. 30, and every runsThursday through March 6. The programs begin promptly at 7 pm at the Cornell Theatre on Spring Street.

You can enjoy these free programs under the leadership of Peter Boak. The first session begins with bluegrass and the blues. Next will be musical theater and Broadway. The focus on February 13 will be on a century of jazz styles. The last three cover country music, then rock’n’roll, and finally Latin music, from mambo to hip-hop. Alan Brigish will discuss the late President Nelson Mandela in the context of South African history next Tuesday at 7 pm at the Vineyard Haven Library. Brigish grew up and was educated in South Africa and met with Mandela in 1999. Learn more about various aspects of the current situation in South Africa and what may be ahead in the future.

Felicia Cheney is the children’s librarian at our library. She says that little ones will be happy to hear that next Tuesday is a special story time with Biscuit the puppy at 10 for up to three-year-olds and at 11 am for age three and up. Biscuit and Felicia will read a few stories, sing a few songs, and Biscuit will have a chance to visit with the kids.

This is the time of year that many of our restaurants close, some for a few weeks or even for the season. I am happy to say that there are many more open all year than in the past. When the cold and darkness gets to you, it can be a treat to enjoy a delicious meal cooked by someone else.

Next month is nearly here. There are some important classes available through Adult and Community Education (ACE MV) at the high school. Saturdays is a college course on Arts in Global Education which offers graduate and undergraduate credits. Tuesdays is ServSafe Food Sanitation Training classes with review and exam as well as Spanish Fluency MadeEasy. Wednesdays offers GED College Prep Math and yoga. Thursday the 6th Susan Klein leads a program on Storytelling. And just in time for Valentine’s Day is a cooking special benefit for ACE MV. Info at acemv.org or 774-310-1131.

Of course you know that your old pills will harm our water if you flush them? And can cause problems for your friends and neighbors. Keeping them is not a good idea either. Take your old pills in to the Police Station any weekday between 8 am and 4 pm. If you only have a few, mix them in with the old coffee grounds in your trash.
