My father called me last week after reading the column and said he had had a good laugh reading about the black sled about which I had reported that had been parked at the end of Sweetened Water for weeks — my father had been passing the sled 10 times a day and had also found himself ruminating on its origins. Well, everyone can be relieved to know the sled, though missing its left brake, has been claimed by someone. Not sure if the previous owner came back around or if the sled has been adopted, but I like to picture it being appreciated somewhere, fulfilling its snowbound destiny.

With Collette, Stevie, and Philip all back to school after a nice winter break, Steve and Katie Jordan headed up to Maine this past weekend for “Snodeo,” an annual Rangley snowmobile festival. The event includes races, X Rave events, chili contest, and caps off with fireworks and a snowmobile parade. According to Katie, it can be as crazy as Spring Break sometimes. Sounds like a blast.

As your woman on the streets, I’ve been checking out a lot of the winter offerings around town, and thought some might be relevant to your interests. First off, did you know about Atria’s two-for-one taco Wednesdays? Those things are phenomenal. Also, Henry’s at the Harbor View is offering two-for-one entrees on Wednesdays, and of course, the Grill on Main, champion of the two-for-one movement, continues to offer the discount Thursday through Saturday. One more to check out is the Wharf’s fried chicken night on Mondays. The portion is so big that you can eat enough to fill you up and still have leftovers to last a couple days. So eat, drink, be merry, and don’t break the bank. Our options may be fewer these days, but at least these stalwart year-round venues try to make it worth our while.

There are a couple things coming up at the Council on Aging that might be of interest to the senior set: The M.V. Museum and the Anchors are teaming up for a special, 45-minute tour of the museum on Monday, Feb. 10, at 10 am. For those interested seniors, this tour can be a first step for anyone who may be considering becoming a docent, or just a one-time enjoyable experience. Also upcoming, the Anchors and the Edgartown Police Department invite you to “Coffee with a Cop,” the last Wednesday of every month beginning Feb. 26, from 9:30 to 10:30 am, on the third floor at the police station. Officer William Bishop will lead us in open discussions of local news and current events, and each week there will be a special guest from the community. Call ECOA, 508-627-4368, to sign up or hear about other upcoming events.

While the Tisbury Travel Club is operated by the Tisbury Senior Center, you should know that when it comes to their day trips, the entire adult island community is welcome to register for discounted ticketing and inexpensive travel off Island to historic, cultural, and entertainment venues in the broader New England area beyond our shores. The Travel Club’s next trip will be to the 2014 Spring Garden & Flower Show in Providence, R.I., on Thursday, February 20.  This year’s show combines America’s passion for gardening with our love affair with classic cars. Vintage autos will be the centerpieces and time theme for the gardens. So, for those who want a sneak peek at spring, call 508-696-4205 to register.

Birthday wishes go out this week to Becky Brown on February 1; to Nonnie Garvin, February 2; and to Ralph Pirozzi, February 4. Now let’s hope that groundhog likes what he sees, because brrr!
