Be a candidate. It’s stimulating work.

To the Editor:

Every year we have local elections in each town. These elections give our citizens the ability to actually have a say in how our Island is run – democracy.

But, it’s sometimes democracy in name only, as for example, in 2013, when there were no, that’s right, no, contested elections.

The deadlines to file your papers are coming up February 20 in some cases. Go to your town clerk’s office. Find out what offices/boards are in play, and participate.

How can you complain if you’re not willing to be a part of the game? The quality of officeholders can only improve when the races are competitive. It’s fun. It’s exciting.

Meet new people. Stimulate your brain.
