Vineyard eighth grade girls finish regular season 14-0
The eighth grade girls travel basketball team picked up two Cape Cod Hoops League road wins last weekend to conclude the regular season with a perfect 14-0 record. The Vineyard earned the number one seed in the upcoming playoffs.
The girls opened up by defeating third-ranked Dartmouth 43-23. The hosts played a box and one on Molly deBettencourt, shutting her down in the first half, but M.V. reached the halftime break in front 22-17. The Vineyard clamped down defensively in the second half, holding Dartmouth to six points. Devin Hill scored 13 points, Molly deBettencourt had 10 and Rose Engler added eight.
The Vineyard followed up by blowing out second place Falmouth 54-19. Devin Hill scorched the basket with 21 points, Molly deBettencourt scored inside and outside for 15 more, while Kat Roberts and Clare Naughton each had six. Lily Piggott was a defensive standout.
The girls open the playoffs Sunday in Falmouth at 11:20 am against eighth seeded Rochester. The winner advances to play either Lakeville or Plymouth North at 2:50 pm.
Sixth grade boys win a pair
The Vineyard sixth grade boys improved to 6-8 with victories last weekend over Dennis Yarmouth 41-40 and Barnstable 44-10. Jeremy Regan lead all scorers against D-Y with 24 points. Tim Wallis and Jack Holmes played stellar defense. Against Barnstable, Jared and Jeremy Regan combined for 30 points, while Avery Villegas dominated the boards. Cam Moore, Oliver Metters and Logan Araujo all scored four points apiece. This weekend, the Vineyard boys will participate in the Cape Cod Youth basketball League playoffs, featuring 20 teams from Southeastern Mass.
Eighth grade boys beat Bourne, Lakeville
The eighth grade boys travel team finished the regular season Saturday, winning two tough games. First, at Bourne, Cole Houston sank a last second shot to give the Vineyard a 55-54 win. Cole led M.V. with 33 points. John Morris and Chris Patnaude both played strong all around games.
The boys returned home in the afternoon and defeated Lakeville, 54-49. Cole Houston was the high scorer with 29 points and Curtis Fournier added 13. The Vineyard (8-6) heads into the playoffs this weekend seeded sixth in a 19-team division.
