The Martha’s Vineyard eighth grade girls travel basketball team capped off an undefeated 17-0 season Saturday at Bourne Middle School with a 34-18 win over Dartmouth in the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League (CCYBL) championship game.
Dartmouth came out in a triangle and two defense designed to stop the Vineyard’s potent scoring duo of Molly deBettencourt and Devin Hill. Molly still finished as the high scorer with 12 points.
The Vineyard’s role players stepped up to contribute as they have all season. Rose Engler had a monster game, finishing with 10 points and numerous rebounds. Meghan Sawyer added eight points to go with a passel of steals. The Vineyard 2-2-1 full-court press was a constant problem for the Dartmouth backcourt.
The girls play next in the Barnstable tournament March 15-16, then in the Massachusetts State travel tournament March 22-23 at Mass Premier Courts, in Foxboro.
